Description

One step into the direction of standardizing the development of three-dimensional user interfaces is to classify 3D interaction techniques and 3D widgets. Since these 3D components are different from user interface components in 2D they need a different classification scheme than in traditional WIMP-interfaces. Within the classification of 3D widgets we focus on widgets and interaction techniques with a geometric representation. Especially the field of application or system controls was not addressed sufficiently in previous research. That is why we also presented a survey and taxonomy of three-dimensional menus.

In addition to the classification of 3D widgets and interaction techniques it is especially important to consistently specify 3D interaction elements in all fields of the mixed reality continuum, such as Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, and Desktop-VR. To discuss the state of the art and research in this field, the workshop "Specification of Mixed Reality User Interfaces: Approaches, Languages, Standardization" was held at IEEE VR 2006. This was a joint effort of Raimund Dachselt, Pablo Figueroa, and Irma Lindt. They also contributed a "Conceptual Model and Specification Language for Mixed Reality Interface Components". At IEEE Virtual Reality 2007 there was the follow-up workshop on Mixed Reality User Interfaces MRUI 2007.
